What Is Qareen - Your Companion Jinn in Islam

Every human is born with a jinn companion called a Qareen. It stays with you your whole life, whispers bad thoughts, and pushes you toward sin. This is not a folk story. It is in the Quran and Hadith. Here is what scholars say about it.

What Is Qareen - The Islamic Definition

Qareen comes from the Arabic root qaarana which means to be joined or paired. In Islam it refers to the jinn companion that Allah assigns to every person at the moment of their creation. It is not a made-up belief. It is mentioned in the Quran and confirmed in authentic Hadith.

Every person on this earth has a Qareen. It is a jinn that is created alongside you and stays with you until you die. Unlike the recording angels who write your deeds, the Qareen is not there to record anything. It is there to influence you.

The job of the Qareen is to push you toward bad things. It whispers doubts into your heart. It makes sin look attractive. It tries to turn you away from prayer and remembrance of Allah. This is why you sometimes feel a strong pull toward something you know is wrong even when you do not want to do it.

Scholars are clear on one thing. The Qareen cannot force you to do anything. It has no power over you. It can only whisper. What you do with those whispers is entirely your choice, and you are fully responsible for your actions.

Important: Believing in Qareen is not superstition. It is part of Islamic belief in the unseen world which includes jinn, angels, and matters of the ghayb that Allah has told us about through the Quran and His Prophet.
قَالَ قَرِينُهُ رَبَّنَا مَا أَطْغَيْتُهُ وَلَكِن كَانَ فِي ضَلَالٍ بَعِيدٍ
His companion jinn will say - Our Lord I did not make him go wrong. He was already far astray on his own.
Surah Qaf 50:27
On the Day of Judgment: The Qareen will be brought forward and questioned. It will speak about its relationship with its human companion. This verse from Surah Qaf is one of the clearest proofs that every person has a Qareen.

What the Quran and Hadith Say About Qareen

The existence of Qareen is not a matter of debate. It is mentioned clearly in the Quran in more than one place and confirmed by the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him in authentic narrations.

Surah Qaf - The Qareen Speaks on Judgment Day

وَجَاءَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّعَهَا سَائِقٌ وَشَهِيدٌ
Every soul will come forward with a driver and a witness alongside it.
Surah Qaf 50:21

Scholars of tafsir explain that the witness mentioned in this verse includes the Qareen who accompanied the person during their life. On the Day of Judgment the Qareen will testify about what it witnessed. It will either be used as evidence or it will try to deny its responsibility as we see in verse 27 where it says it did not make the person go astray.

Surah Qaf 50:21 and 50:27

Surah Az-Zukhruf - The Qareen Assigned to Those Who Forget Allah

وَمَن يَعْشُ عَن ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَانًا فَهُوَ لَهُ قَرِينٌ
Whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful - We assign to him a devil who becomes his Qareen.
Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:36

This verse is extremely important. Allah makes it clear that when a person distances themselves from His remembrance, a shaytan is assigned to them as a constant companion. The word used is Qareen. The next verse tells us that this Qareen will then lead the person away from the straight path and the person will think they are doing fine.

Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:36-37

Hadith of the Prophet - Even the Prophet Had a Qareen

The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him confirmed to his companions that every one of them has a companion from the jinn and a companion from the angels. When the companions asked whether the Prophet himself had one, he said yes, but Allah helped him against his Qareen so it only called him toward good.

This is one of the most important narrations on this subject because it shows that having a Qareen is not a sign of weakness or spiritual failure. Even the best of creation had one. The difference is how much influence you allow it to have over your heart and your actions.

Sahih Muslim - Hadith 2814

Surah An-Nisa - The Shaytan as Misleading Companion

وَمَن يَكُنِ الشَّيْطَانُ لَهُ قَرِينًا فَسَاءَ قَرِينًا
And whoever has Shaytan as his Qareen - what a terrible companion that is.
Surah An-Nisa 4:38

Here Allah Himself describes having Shaytan as a Qareen as a terrible thing. This verse is a warning. The stronger your connection to Allah through prayer, Quran, and dhikr - the weaker the hold of your Qareen becomes over your thoughts and actions.

Surah An-Nisa 4:38

How Qareen Affects Your Daily Life

The Qareen does not attack you the way sihr or nazar does. It works slowly through your thoughts, your feelings, and your moment-to-moment decisions. Most people never realise it is happening.

💭

Whispers Negative Thoughts

You are about to pray but suddenly feel lazy. You plan to read Quran but your mind goes elsewhere. These are not always your own thoughts. The Qareen constantly whispers to pull you away from acts of worship and remembrance of Allah.

😶

Makes Sin Seem Normal

The Qareen does not always push you toward obvious sins. It works gradually. First it makes a small wrong thing seem fine. Then a slightly bigger one. Over time, things that would have troubled your conscience no longer feel wrong at all.

🌙

Appears in Dreams

Some scholars say the Qareen can appear in your dreams in the form of people you know or frightening shapes. Bad or disturbing dreams are sometimes connected to the Qareen. Reciting Ayat al-Kursi and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah before sleep is the recommended protection.

Increases During Heedlessness

When you stop doing dhikr, miss prayers, or fill your time with things that take you away from Allah - the Qareen grows stronger in its influence. The more absent-minded you are of Allah, the more room the Qareen has to operate. This is exactly what Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:36 is warning us about.

👥

Influences Your Relationships

The Qareen can make you see problems in good relationships and miss red flags in bad ones. It can encourage jealousy, suspicion, and arguments between people who would otherwise get along well. Disputes that start over nothing often have this spiritual dimension.

🚫

Cannot Force You to Do Anything

This is the most important thing to understand. Your Qareen has no power to make you do something. All it can do is whisper. On the Day of Judgment it will itself say that it did not force you. You always have free will. You are always responsible for your choices.

How to Reduce the Influence of Your Qareen

You cannot remove your Qareen. It stays with you until you die. But you can weaken its influence over you through consistent acts of worship and remembrance of Allah. Scholars agree that a person with strong iman gives the Qareen very little room to work.

1

Consistent Daily Dhikr

Morning and evening adhkar are your first line of protection. The Prophet taught us specific supplications for morning and evening that act as a shield against shaytan and the Qareen. Do not skip them even when you are busy.

2

Recite Ayat al-Kursi

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer and before sleep is one of the most powerful protections in Islam. The Prophet described its effect in keeping shaytan away throughout the night.

3

Pray Your Five Salah

The five daily prayers are your connection to Allah. Each prayer weakens the grip of the Qareen. Missing prayers deliberately is one of the fastest ways to increase its influence over your thoughts and choices.

4

Read Quran Regularly

The Quran is a protection for the believer. Regular recitation, even a few verses a day, keeps your heart connected to Allah and makes it harder for the Qareen to settle its whispers in your mind.

وَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
If a whisper from shaytan touches you, seek refuge in Allah. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Surah Al-Araf 7:200

When you feel a sudden pull toward something wrong, or a thought enters your mind that you know is not right, say Audhu Billahi Minash Shaytan ir Rajeem straight away. This is not just a tradition. Allah commands it directly in the Quran.

Scholars say that the Qareen loses much of its ability to whisper when a person regularly takes refuge in Allah. It is like cutting off its access to you step by step through your worship.

If you are experiencing overwhelming negative thoughts, constant bad dreams, or a feeling that something is influencing you in a way that regular dhikr is not helping with - consult a scholar. There may be a separate spiritual issue alongside the normal influence of the Qareen.

Qareen and Hamzad - What Is the Difference

Many people in South Asia use these two words as if they mean the same thing. They do not. One is an authentic Islamic concept from the Quran and Hadith. The other comes from South Asian and Persian spiritual traditions and has no basis in Islamic sources.

Qareen - Islamic Concept

Mentioned in the Quran

Qareen is confirmed in Surah Qaf, Surah Az-Zukhruf, and Surah An-Nisa. It is also confirmed in Sahih Muslim. Every Muslim must accept its existence as part of believing in the unseen. It is a jinn assigned to every human. Its purpose is to whisper and mislead. It cannot be controlled or used by humans.

Hamzad - Cultural Belief

Not From Quran or Hadith

Hamzad is a concept from South Asian and Persian folk spirituality. People believe it is a spiritual double that can be controlled or harnessed for various purposes. There is no mention of Hamzad in the Quran. There is no authentic Hadith that uses this word. Scholars consider beliefs about controlling or using a Hamzad to be outside the boundaries of Islam.

Key Difference

You Cannot Control Your Qareen

Some people claim they can teach you to control or access your Qareen for worldly purposes. This is not possible and has no basis in Islamic teachings. Your Qareen is a jinn. Attempting to communicate with or use jinn for personal gain involves practices that Islamic scholars unanimously warn against. Consult a scholar before trusting anyone who makes such claims.

A common situation: People sometimes go to certain practitioners who tell them their Hamzad can be activated or used. Some charge large amounts of money for this. Mufti Hasan advises Muslims to stay away from such practices entirely. If you have been to such a person or paid for such services and are now experiencing problems, contact a scholar for proper Islamic guidance.

Common Myths About Qareen

A lot of what people believe about Qareen is not from Islam at all. Here are the most common wrong beliefs and what scholars actually say.

Myth

You can see your Qareen if you do certain practices

What Scholars Say

There is no authentic Islamic method for seeing your Qareen. Anyone who claims to teach you how to see it is likely involving you in practices that have nothing to do with Islam and may cause you harm. The Qareen operates in the unseen world and that is where it stays.

Myth

A pious person has no Qareen

What Scholars Say

Every single human has a Qareen without exception. The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him had one. What changes with piety is not the existence of the Qareen but its strength of influence. A person with strong iman and consistent worship gives their Qareen very little room to affect their decisions.

Myth

Your Qareen causes all your bad thoughts and sins

What Scholars Say

Not every bad thought comes from the Qareen. Humans also have their own nafs which can incline toward evil. Additionally, external shayateen also whisper to people. Taking responsibility for your own choices is a core part of Islamic belief. Blaming everything on the Qareen is incorrect and removes your sense of personal responsibility.

Myth

The Qareen of a Muslim and a non-Muslim are the same

What Scholars Say

Some scholars hold the view that when a person takes their shahadah, their Qareen also becomes Muslim. This view is based on a Hadith narration. If true, it means the Qareen of a sincere Muslim may actually call them toward good rather than evil. This is an area where scholars differ and it is best to ask a scholar about the different opinions.

Myth

Your Qareen is responsible on Judgment Day for your sins

What Scholars Say

The Quran is very clear on this. In Surah Qaf the Qareen itself says it did not make the person go astray. The Qareen is not responsible for your sins. You are fully responsible. It can whisper but it cannot force. On Judgment Day every person answers for their own deeds.

Myth

Ruqyah removes your Qareen permanently

What Scholars Say

Ruqyah is treatment for sihr, nazar, and jinn possession - not for the Qareen. Since every human is meant to have a Qareen by the decree of Allah, it cannot be removed through ruqyah or any other method. What you can do is reduce its influence through worship, dhikr, and a strong connection with Allah.

Can the Qareen of a Muslim Become Muslim

This is one of the more discussed questions among Islamic scholars and there are different valid opinions on it.

There is a narration in which the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said that his own Qareen had become Muslim and only called him toward good. Some scholars take this to mean that the Qareen of every Muslim also becomes Muslim at the point of their conversion or iman.

If this is the case, then a sincere Muslim whose Qareen has become Muslim would have a companion that actually encourages good deeds, reminds them of prayers, and does not whisper toward sin. This would explain why some people naturally find it easier to do good and harder to be inclined toward wrongdoing.

Other scholars say this was specific to the Prophet and does not apply to all believers. Under this view, every person's Qareen remains an adversary throughout their life regardless of their faith.

The key point: Whether or not the Qareen becomes Muslim, the practical advice remains the same. Keep your iman strong through prayer, Quran, and dhikr. This weakens any negative influence and strengthens your connection to Allah.
وَمَن يَعْشُ عَن ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَانًا فَهُوَ لَهُ قَرِينٌ
Whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful - We assign to him a shaytan and it becomes his Qareen.
Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:36

This verse tells us that the strength and closeness of the Qareen is directly connected to how much a person turns away from Allah. The solution is always the same. Come back to the remembrance of Allah. Pray your prayers. Read your Quran. Do your daily adhkar. These are not just religious obligations. They are your protection.

Qareen - Frequently Asked Questions

Qareen is a jinn companion that Allah assigns to every human being at birth. It stays with the person throughout their life and whispers negative thoughts to encourage them toward sin and away from Allah. This is confirmed in the Quran in Surah Qaf, Surah Az-Zukhruf, and Surah An-Nisa, and in the authentic Hadith of Sahih Muslim.
Yes. The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him confirmed in Sahih Muslim that he had a Qareen, just like every other human being. He also said that Allah helped him against his Qareen so it only called him toward good. This shows that having a Qareen is not a sign of spiritual weakness. Every person has one.
No. Qareen is an authentic Islamic concept mentioned by name in the Quran. Hamzad is a term from South Asian and Persian spiritual traditions and does not appear anywhere in the Quran or in authentic Hadith. They are not the same thing. Scholars advise Muslims to stick to what the Quran and Sunnah say about this topic and not mix Islamic belief with cultural folk practices.
No. The Qareen cannot be removed, killed, or separated from a person. It is assigned by Allah and stays with the person until death. Anyone who claims they can remove your Qareen through any method is making a false claim. What you can do is reduce its influence through worship, dhikr, and maintaining a strong connection to Allah.
No. There is no Islamic method for communicating with or controlling your Qareen. The Qareen is a jinn and Muslims are prohibited from seeking help from jinn or trying to contact them for personal purposes. Anyone offering to teach you how to access or use your Qareen is promoting something outside Islam and possibly leading you into harm. Stay away from such people and practices.
There is a scholarly discussion on this point. Some scholars, based on a Hadith narration, believe the Qareen of a Muslim also becomes Muslim and begins calling them toward good rather than evil. Other scholars say this was specific to the Prophet only. Both views are held by recognised scholars. The practical advice is the same regardless - strengthen your iman and your Qareen will have less and less negative influence over you.
The most effective protection is consistent worship. The five daily prayers, morning and evening adhkar, recitation of Ayat al-Kursi after every prayer and before sleep, regular Quran recitation, and saying Audhu Billahi when a bad thought enters your mind. Scholars say that the more connected you are to the remembrance of Allah, the weaker the Qareen's ability to affect you becomes. There is no other shortcut.
Not always. Scholars identify three sources of bad inclinations in a person: the nafs, which is the self that can incline toward evil, the Qareen which whispers from the jinn world, and external shayateen who also whisper to people. Not every negative thought comes from the Qareen. Some bad thoughts are simply from your own lower desires or from the influence of your environment. Taking personal responsibility is important alongside understanding spiritual influences.
