Full Arabic Text

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّي اَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَ اَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ وَ اَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيْمِ،
فَاِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا اَقْدِرُ وَ تَعْلَمُ وَلَا اَعْلَمُ وَ اَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوْبِ،
اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ اَنَّ هٰذَا الْاَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِّيْ فِيْ دِيْنِيْ وَ مَعَاشِيْ وَ عَاقِبَةِ اَمْرِيْ
فَاقْدُرْهُ لِيْ وَ يَسِّرْهُ لِيْ ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِيْ فِيْهِ،
وَ اِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ اَنَّ هٰذَا الْاَمْرَ شَرٌّ لِّيْ فِيْ دِيْنِيْ وَ مَعَاشِيْ وَ عَاقِبَةِ اَمْرِيْ
فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّيْ وَ اصْرِفْنِيْ عَنْهُ وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ ثُمَّ اَرْضِنِيْ بِهِ

Allaahumma innii astakhiiruka biʼilmika wa astaqdiruka biqudratika wa as-aluka min fadlikal-ʻadhiim,

fa-innaka taqdiru wa laa aqdiru wa taʼlamu wa laa aʼlamu wa anta ʻallaamul-ghuyuub,

Allaahumma in kunta taʼlamu anna haadhal-amra khayrun lii fii diinii wa maʼaashii wa ʻaaqibati amrii

faqdurhu lii wa yassirhu lii thumma baarik lii fiihi,

wa in kunta taʼlamu anna haadhal-amra sharrun lii fii diinii wa maʼaashii wa ʻaaqibati amrii

fasrifhu ʻannii wasrifnii ʻanhu waqdur liyal-khayra haythu kaana thumma ardhinii bih.

Sahih al-Bukhari — Hadith 1162

Jabir (RA) narrated: “The Prophet ﷺ used to teach us istikhara for all matters, just as he taught us a surah of the Quran.”

“O Allah, I seek guidance from Your knowledge, and I seek help through Your power, and I ask You from Your immense bounty.

For surely You have power and I do not, You know and I do not know, and You are the Knower of the unseen.

O Allah, if in Your knowledge this matter [mention your matter] is good for me in my religion, livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs — then decree it for me, facilitate it, and bless me in it.

And if in Your knowledge this matter is harmful for me — then turn it away from me, turn me away from it, decree good for me wherever it may be, and make me content with it.”

How to Perform Salatul Istikhara

The complete method as narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari — five steps from purification to reading the signs.

Make Wudu — Ritual Purification

Ensure you are in a complete state of ritual purity. Salatul Istikhara requires wudu exactly as any formal salah does.

Form the Intention — Niyyah

Intend in your heart to pray two rak'ah of nafl specifically for istikhara regarding your matter. No need to verbalise it.

Pray Two Rak'ah of Voluntary Prayer

Perform two units of nafl salah. After al-Fatiha in the first rak'ah, Surah al-Kafirun is recommended; in the second, Surah al-Ikhlas.

Avoid the three forbidden times: sunrise, solar noon, sunset

Recite the Istikhara Dua

After completing salah, recite the full dua above. At "haadhal-amr" (this matter), hold your specific situation in your heart.

Observe Your Inclination

Istikhara works through a shift in your heart's inclination and ease or difficulty in events. Proceed when your heart inclines and matters open up.
