👁 What is the Evil Eye (Nazar)?

The evil eye is called nazar in Arabic and Urdu. It happens when someone looks at a person, an object, or a situation with strong admiration or surprise - and this look causes harm to what they were looking at.

The word nazar comes from the Arabic root that means "to look." When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) talked about this, he used the word al-ayn, which also means "the eye."

What makes the evil eye different from regular looking is the power that comes from the eyes of certain people. Some eyes carry a stronger effect than others. This is not something the person can control. A person with a strong eye can cause harm without meaning to - sometimes even while being kind and giving a compliment.

A Simple Way to Understand It

Think of it like this. A person walks past a beautiful garden. They stare at the flowers with strong admiration but forget to say Bismillah or Masha Allah. The next morning the flowers are wilted for no reason. This is the kind of harm the evil eye can cause.

It is not magic. It is not done on purpose most of the time. It is simply the effect of a powerful gaze on something that was not protected.

Key Facts

  • The evil eye is confirmed in Islam - not just a cultural belief
  • It can affect any person, animal, or object
  • The person giving it may have no bad intention
  • Even someone who loves you can give you the evil eye
  • It is different from black magic (sihr)
  • It has a confirmed Islamic cure through Ruqyah

A Note on Medical Symptoms

Many symptoms of the evil eye are also symptoms of physical or mental health conditions. Always see a doctor first. The evil eye does not replace medical care. Both can be addressed at the same time.

📖 Quran and Hadith - Proof That Evil Eye is Real

Some people think the evil eye is just a cultural superstition. In Islam, this is not the case. The Quran and authentic hadith both confirm that the evil eye exists and that it can cause real harm.

Evidence from the Quran

وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ اِذَا حَسَدَ

And from the evil of the envier when he envies. (Surah Al-Falaq, 113:5)

In this verse, Allah tells us to seek protection from the harm of the envier. This is a direct confirmation that envy - which is closely connected to the evil eye - can cause real harm. Allah would not tell us to seek protection from something that does not exist.

وَاِن يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِاَبْصَارِهِمْ

And the disbelievers almost strike you down with their eyes. (Surah Al-Qalam, 68:51)

Classical scholars of tafsir (Quran commentary) mention this verse as evidence for the evil eye. The word "yuzliqunaka" means to make someone slip or fall. This shows the eyes can cause direct harm to a person.

Evidence from Hadith

"The evil eye is real. If anything could have preceded the decree of Allah, the evil eye would have preceded it. And when you are asked to take a bath (for the victim of the evil eye), wash yourself."

Sahih Muslim 2188

"The evil eye is real and it can take a man to his grave and take a camel to the cooking pot."

Reported by Ibn Hibban - authenticated by Al-Albani

"The evil eye that comes from a human being is real. And the evil eye that comes from a jinn is also real."

Authenticated by Ibn Qayyim in Zad al-Maad

"Ruqyah (seeking protection through Quran) is only allowed for the evil eye and for the bite of a scorpion."

Sunan Abu Dawud 3884 - showing Ruqyah was specifically used for nazar

What Scholars Say

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, one of the greatest scholars in Islamic history, wrote extensively about the evil eye in his book Zad al-Maad. He described it as one of the strongest forms of harm that can come from the creation. He said it weakens the soul, the body, and even causes physical illness. He confirmed it is real based on Quran, hadith, and direct observation.

Nazar vs Hasad - What is the Difference?

Many people confuse these two things. They are related but they are not the same.

Nazar (Evil Eye)

  • Happens through a look or gaze
  • Can happen without any bad intention
  • Even a loving look can cause it
  • Not a sin for the person giving it
  • Can come from a friend, parent, or stranger
  • Prevented by saying Masha Allah

Hasad (Envy)

  • Happens in the heart - wishing a blessing is taken away
  • Always involves a bad intention
  • Always requires wishing harm
  • Is a major sin in Islam
  • The Prophet warned us strongly against it
  • Prevented only by purifying the heart
Point of Difference Nazar (Evil Eye) Hasad (Envy)
Requires bad intention? No Yes
Is it a sin? No Yes - major sin
How it travels Through the eyes Through the heart
Can a loving person cause it? Yes Not usually
Main prevention Saying Masha Allah Purifying the heart
Mentioned in Quran? Yes Yes

The two can work together. A person who has hasad in their heart is more likely to give a strong nazar. But nazar alone can come from a person who has no ill feelings toward you at all.

Ibn al-Qayyim said that the evil eye follows quickly after admiration in the heart. When a person admires something and their soul sends out a harmful effect, this is what we call the evil eye. Zad al-Maad, Ibn al-Qayyim

🔬 How Does the Evil Eye Actually Work?

This is a question many people ask. How can a look cause harm? The answer lies in understanding the nature of the soul (nafs) and how Allah has designed the world to work.

The Explanation from Ibn al-Qayyim

Ibn al-Qayyim explained that when a person with a powerful soul looks at something with strong admiration, the soul releases a subtle poison. This poison travels through the air - or even over distance - and affects the person or thing being looked at. Just as certain animals and snakes can release venom through their bite, certain people can release harm through their gaze.

He compared it to how a mirror reflects light back at you. The eye receives and sends. When a person stares with concentration and emotion, something exits from them and enters what they are looking at.

Can It Travel Over Distance or Online?

Yes. Scholars have said the evil eye can travel through a photograph. In today's world this is relevant because people post photos online and receive thousands of admiring looks. The basic ruling is that the same thing that applies in person can apply through a photo.

This does not mean you should never post photos. It means you should protect yourself and your children through the daily adhkar and duas. If you post a photo and you notice strange things happening afterward, consider doing Ruqyah.

Why Do Some Eyes Have a Stronger Effect?

The Prophet himself acknowledged this. He said the evil eye is real - meaning that not all eyes are equal in their effect. Some people have stronger eyes than others. This is just like how some people have stronger voices, stronger hands, or stronger personalities. It is part of how Allah created human beings to be different from each other.

An Important Point

Having a strong eye is not a defect and not a sin. The person with a strong eye is not responsible for harm they cause when they had no bad intention. But if they know they have a strong eye, scholars say they have a responsibility to always say Masha Allah when they see or admire something. This is what protects others from them.

🔎 Signs and Symptoms of Evil Eye (Nazar)

There is no fixed list of symptoms that always means evil eye. The signs can be different for different people. But based on what scholars and practitioners of Ruqyah have observed over centuries, there are common patterns.

Remember: always check with a doctor first. These symptoms are also signs of medical and psychological conditions. Evil eye and illness can exist at the same time.

Physical Symptoms

🤕
HEADACHES Constant headaches especially at the top of the head or behind the eyes. Painkillers do not seem to help much.
😴
HEAVY TIREDNESS Feeling exhausted even after sleeping well. A heavy feeling in the body like carrying weights.
🤢
NAUSEA Feeling sick in the stomach without any food-related cause. Sometimes vomiting.
FEELING COLD Feeling unusually cold even in warm weather. Cold hands and feet that do not warm up easily.
😶
PALE FACE Face looks dull and pale compared to normal. People notice you look unwell even when tests are normal.
💔
CHEST TIGHTNESS Feeling of pressure or tightness in the chest. Like something is sitting on your chest. Breathing feels harder.

Mental and Emotional Symptoms

😞
SUDDEN SADNESS Feeling very low and sad without any clear reason. Mood drops suddenly after things were going well.
💭
NEGATIVE THOUGHTS Mind filled with dark or negative thoughts that did not exist before. Feeling hopeless without reason.
😤
IRRITABILITY Getting angry or upset at small things. Feeling annoyed with people you normally love.
🧠
POOR CONCENTRATION Unable to focus on work, study, or even simple tasks. Mind feels foggy and slow.

Life and Circumstance Symptoms

📉
SUDDEN BAD LUCK Things that were going well suddenly stop working. Plans fall apart for no clear reason.
😤
RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS Problems starting between people who were previously happy together - couples, families, business partners.
🌙
BAD DREAMS Disturbing dreams at night. Feeling scared during sleep. Waking up suddenly without reason.
🙏
AVOIDING WORSHIP Feeling reluctant to pray or read Quran. Feeling that worship is heavy and difficult when it was easy before.

Important Warning

Do not diagnose yourself with evil eye every time something goes wrong. Hardship is a natural part of life. Allah tests us through difficulties. Before concluding you have nazar, rule out medical causes, consider whether you have neglected your own prayers and worship, and reflect on whether the problem has a logical worldly explanation. Evil eye is real but it is not the answer to every problem.

👥 Who is Most Vulnerable to Evil Eye?

Anyone can be affected by the evil eye. But scholars and practitioners have noted that certain situations make a person or thing more likely to be affected.

People Who Are Most Vulnerable

  • Babies and young children - people admire them constantly without saying Masha Allah
  • Beautiful people - those whose looks attract a lot of attention
  • Successful people - those who have achieved something notable recently
  • Newly married couples - people look at them with curiosity and admiration
  • People who do not do regular adhkar - less spiritual protection makes them vulnerable
  • People who show off their blessings - displaying wealth or happiness openly invites more eyes

Things That Are Most Vulnerable

  • New business - when things are growing rapidly and people notice
  • New home - when moving into a beautiful house
  • New car - when driving a new vehicle that attracts looks
  • Healthy animals - this was mentioned specifically in hadith
  • Gardens and crops - mentioned in the story of the two men in Surah Al-Kahf
  • Public achievements - exam results, promotions, awards

The Lesson from Surah Al-Kahf

In the Quran, there is a story of two men. One had a beautiful garden and the other did not. The man with the garden was proud and kept showing it off. He did not say "Masha Allah, La Quwwata Illa Billah." His garden was destroyed. Scholars say the lesson here includes the danger of showing off blessings and not crediting Allah, which leaves you open to the evil eye of others and the displeasure of Allah.

🛡 Daily Protection from Evil Eye

The best approach to the evil eye is prevention. Islam gives us a complete daily system of spiritual protection. This is not a ritual or superstition. These are actions that the Prophet himself did every day and taught his companions to do.

The Most Important Protective Verses

اللَّهُ لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ لَا تَاْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ

Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255) - The Verse of the Throne

The Prophet said: "Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every prayer, nothing will prevent them from entering Paradise except death." He also said that whoever recites it before sleeping, Allah will protect them until morning and no shaytan can come near them. This is one of the strongest forms of protection available to a Muslim.

MORNING - AFTER FAJR
  • Ayat al-Kursi (1 time)
  • Surah Al-Ikhlas (3 times)
  • Surah Al-Falaq (3 times)
  • Surah An-Nas (3 times)
  • Morning adhkar from Hisn al-Muslim
EVENING - AFTER ASR
  • Ayat al-Kursi (1 time)
  • Surah Al-Ikhlas (3 times)
  • Surah Al-Falaq (3 times)
  • Surah An-Nas (3 times)
  • Evening adhkar from Hisn al-Muslim
BEFORE SLEEP
  • Last 2 verses of Surah Al-Baqarah
  • Ayat al-Kursi (1 time)
  • Blow into hands and wipe over body
  • Say Bismillah before lying down
WEEKLY PROTECTION
  • Surah Al-Baqarah recited in the home
  • Surah Al-Kahf on Fridays
  • Increase sadaqah (charity)
  • Pray all 5 prayers consistently

Protection Through Daily Behavior

What to Do

  • Say Masha Allah when you see something good
  • Say Bismillah before starting any task
  • Be modest about your blessings - do not show off
  • Keep your five daily prayers consistent
  • Give sadaqah regularly - charity is a shield
  • Maintain ties with family - cutting them weakens protection
  • Recite La hawla wala quwwata illa billah often

What to Avoid

  • Do not show off your new things to people unnecessarily
  • Do not post every achievement on social media
  • Do not tell everyone your plans before they are complete
  • Do not discuss your salary or wealth openly
  • Do not take photos of your food at every meal for attention
  • Do not ignore your adhkar when life is going well

💬 Saying Masha Allah - How and When

The phrase Masha Allah is one of the simplest and most powerful tools against the evil eye. But many people say it wrongly or only say it sometimes. Here is the complete picture.

What Masha Allah Means

Masha Allah means "Whatever Allah wills." When you say it, you are acknowledging that the beautiful or good thing you are looking at exists only because Allah willed it. You are redirecting the praise away from the created thing and toward the Creator. This act of redirecting breaks the power of the admiring gaze.

مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

Masha Allah, La Quwwata Illa Billah - Whatever Allah wills. There is no power except through Allah.

This longer version is mentioned directly in the Quran in Surah Al-Kahf verse 39. Allah told the man with the garden to say this. Many scholars say this full version is more powerful and more recommended than just saying Masha Allah alone.

When to Say Masha Allah

1

When you see a beautiful baby or child

This is the most common situation. When you admire a child - even your own - say Masha Allah. Many mothers do not know that you can give your own baby the evil eye through excessive admiring without saying this.

2

When you see someone doing well - in health, work, or life

If a friend tells you good news, your natural reaction is to compliment them. The Islamic way is to say Masha Allah before or along with the compliment. This protects them from your gaze.

3

When you see your own good situation

Looking in the mirror and feeling good about yourself. Seeing your business grow. Seeing your children succeed. Say Masha Allah to yourself. It protects you from the evil eye you could accidentally give yourself.

4

Before you take or share a photo

Before posting a photo of your child, your food, your car, or your home - say Masha Allah. Many contemporary scholars advise this specifically for social media use today.

Saying It Aloud vs. In the Heart

The Prophet commanded it to be said aloud. Ibn Majah and other collections record that when someone saw something they admired and did not say Masha Allah, the Prophet told them to go back and say it. Saying it quietly in your heart may have some benefit but saying it out loud is the clear Sunnah.

🕊 Ruqyah Treatment for Evil Eye

When protection has not worked or when you believe you already have the evil eye, the Islamic treatment is called Ruqyah. This means using the Quran and authentic prophetic duas for healing. It is the only treatment directly endorsed in hadith for the evil eye.

The Basic Ruqyah for Evil Eye - Step by Step

1

Make sincere intention (niyyah)

Before beginning, make clear intention in your heart that you are doing this seeking healing from Allah alone. The Quran is the healing but the healer is Allah. Start with saying Bismillah out loud.

2

Recite Surah Al-Fatiha (7 times)

This is called "Umm al-Quran" - the mother of the Quran. There is a famous hadith where the Prophet's companion cured a man who was bitten using only Surah Al-Fatiha. It is the foundation of Ruqyah.

3

Recite Ayat al-Kursi (3 times)

The Verse of the Throne from Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255. Recite it while blowing softly into your cupped hands. Wipe over your head, face, chest, and the rest of your body.

4

Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas (3 times each)

These are called Al-Mu'awwidhatayn (the two protection surahs). They are specifically about seeking Allah's protection from harm. Al-Falaq mentions the envier directly. Recite while blowing into hands and wiping over body.

5

Recite the Ruqyah dua of the Prophet for Hassan and Husain

The Prophet used to say: "I seek protection for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature and from every evil eye." This dua is specifically for the evil eye and is recorded in Sahih Bukhari.

6

Ruqyah water

Recite the above verses into a glass of water. The water picks up the blessing of the Quran. Drink some of it. Pour some over your head. This is a Sunnah-based practice. Some scholars also recommend adding black seed (habatus sauda) to it.

7

Do this consistently

One session is not always enough. Do this every day for at least a week. Some people need 2-3 weeks of consistent Ruqyah. Combine it with increased salah, sadaqah, and asking Allah directly through sincere dua.

If You Know Who Gave You the Evil Eye

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If anyone of you sees something from his brother that impresses him, he should make dua for barakah for him (say Masha Allah or Barak Allahu feek). Indeed the evil eye is real." And regarding treatment: "The person who gave the evil eye should perform wudu, and the water should be used to wash the affected person."

Collected in various hadith works - the washing treatment is confirmed in Musnad Ahmad

This treatment involves the person who gave the evil eye performing wudu. The water used in the wudu is then collected in a container. This water is poured over the affected person from behind their head. In practice, this requires the person who gave the evil eye to agree and cooperate. This is not always possible, so the Ruqyah method above is the main practical approach.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Do not go to a witch or magician for treatment. This is haram and makes things worse. Do not use taweez (amulets) with unknown content. Do not seek treatment through people who claim to use jinn to cure. All of these are forms of sihr and are forbidden. Stick to Quran and authentic prophetic duas. This is the only halal treatment.

👶 Evil Eye Protection for Babies and Children

Babies and young children are the most commonly affected by evil eye. The reason is simple. Babies attract a huge amount of admiring looks from everyone. Relatives, neighbors, strangers in the market - everyone looks at a baby with joy and admiration. When people forget to say Masha Allah, all of those looks build up.

The Prophet used to seek protection for Hasan and Husain (his grandsons) by saying: "I seek protection for you both in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every evil eye."

Sahih Bukhari 3371 - This is the proof that the Prophet specifically protected children from the evil eye

Daily Protection Routine for Children

What Parents Should Do

  • Recite the Prophet's dua for children every morning and evening
  • Recite Ayat al-Kursi and Al-Mu'awwidhatayn before the child sleeps
  • Blow into the child's face and rub the hands gently over them after recitation
  • Say Masha Allah yourself when you look at your child admiringly
  • Ask visitors to say Masha Allah when they admire the child
  • Teach children the duas as soon as they can speak

Things to Be Careful About

  • Do not post photos of babies and young children publicly online without saying Masha Allah
  • Do not dress children in overly fancy clothing that attracts excessive looks
  • Do not discuss the child's achievements or health in front of many people
  • Do not take children to environments with a lot of envious or jealous people without protecting them first

Signs of Evil Eye in Babies

  • Suddenly stops feeding or refuses milk after feeding well before
  • Cries constantly without obvious reason
  • Fever that comes and goes without infection
  • Baby was healthy and happy then suddenly became unwell after many people visited
  • Throwing up after feeds that were previously fine
  • Restless sleep and waking up screaming

Always See a Doctor First

All of the above symptoms can also be caused by medical conditions. Never delay getting a baby checked by a doctor because you think it is the evil eye. The two can exist together. Get medical help and do Ruqyah at the same time.

💼 Evil Eye on Business and Wealth

The evil eye does not only affect people. It can affect businesses, animals, property, and money. When a business suddenly starts struggling after a period of growth, when customers stop coming without reason, or when money seems to disappear - this can sometimes be the evil eye.

Signs of Evil Eye on Business

  • Business was growing then suddenly stopped for no clear reason
  • Regular customers stopped coming without any change in your service
  • Constant technical problems, equipment breaking, stock going missing
  • Staff conflicts that come from nowhere
  • Deals fall through at the last moment consistently
  • The period of problems started after someone visited and admired your business

Protection for Business

  • Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in your shop or office regularly
  • Start work every day with Bismillah
  • Give sadaqah from your income regularly - charity is a shield for wealth
  • Do not show off how much you earn or how well the business is doing
  • Avoid haram - interest, cheating, unfair dealings remove the barakah
  • Keep a copy of Ayat al-Kursi displayed respectfully in the workplace
The Prophet said: "Give sadaqah without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity." Charity is one of the strongest shields against the evil eye and all forms of harm. Al-Tirmidhi 1887

🚫 The Blue Eye Symbol (Nazar Boncugu) - Islamic Ruling

You have probably seen it. The blue eye symbol - often a blue and white glass bead in the shape of an eye. It is called nazar boncugu in Turkish. It is extremely popular in Turkey, Greece, and has spread to many Muslim countries. You see it on keychains, hanging in homes, on babies, in cars.

Where Does It Come From?

This symbol has no origin in Islam. It comes from ancient Anatolian and Greek folk religion. The belief was that the blue color and the eye shape would reflect the evil eye back at the person who gave it. It is a pagan practice that became mixed into the culture of Muslim regions through centuries of contact.

What Do Islamic Scholars Say?

🚫

This is Not Permitted in Islam

Wearing or hanging the blue eye symbol is not allowed in Islam. The Prophet said: "Whoever hangs an amulet has associated partners with Allah." The blue eye symbol is an amulet. It is believed to protect through its own power or through a pagan concept of reflection. Both of these beliefs are shirk (associating partners with Allah). Protection in Islam comes only through Quran, dua, and the remembrance of Allah - not through objects and symbols.

Why People Use It

  • Cultural tradition passed down from parents
  • They see it everywhere and assume it is Islamic
  • They want protection and this is what their culture offers
  • They do not know the ruling

The Islamic Alternative

  • Hang a frame with Ayat al-Kursi in Arabic calligraphy in your home
  • Recite the morning and evening adhkar daily
  • Teach children the protective duas from childhood
  • Trust in Allah alone for protection - this is the meaning of Tawheed

If you currently have the blue eye symbol in your home or on your body, the right thing to do is to remove it. Replace it with the habit of daily Quranic recitation. Ask Allah for forgiveness if you were wearing it with the belief that it has protective power.

Common Myths About Evil Eye in Islam

Because the evil eye is part of many cultures, there are many false beliefs mixed in with the true Islamic understanding. Here are some of the most common ones.

Myth 1: Only jealous people give evil eye

Truth: The evil eye can come from anyone who looks with strong admiration - even someone who loves you. A mother can give her own child the evil eye by looking at them with too much admiration without saying Masha Allah.

Myth 2: The blue eye symbol protects you

Truth: This is not from Islam. It is a cultural amulet with pagan origins. Using it is not permitted and placing trust in it is a form of shirk. See the section above for more details.

Myth 3: You need to know who gave you the evil eye to treat it

Truth: You do not need to know the source. Ruqyah with Quran works regardless of who gave you the evil eye. Trying to find out who it was often leads to suspicion, family problems, and false accusations.

Myth 4: Breaking an egg or burning certain herbs removes evil eye

Truth: These are cultural practices with no basis in Islam. They may come from Hindu, ancient pagan, or folk traditions. Islamic treatment is Quran and authentic dua only.

Myth 5: Evil eye only affects the poor and weak

Truth: The evil eye can affect anyone regardless of how rich, educated, or pious they are. The Prophet himself sought protection from it. No one is immune without proper protection.

Myth 6: If you recite a lot you become immune and never need protection again

Truth: The morning and evening adhkar need to be done every single day consistently. They are not a one-time treatment. Think of them like eating - you need them every day, not just once.

Nazar vs Black Magic (Sihr) - Key Differences

Many people confuse the evil eye with black magic. They are different things with different causes, different symptoms, and different treatments. Getting this wrong can lead to seeking the wrong kind of help.

Factor Evil Eye (Nazar) Black Magic (Sihr)
How it happens Through a look of admiration Done deliberately with the intention to harm
Requires bad intention? No - can be accidental Yes - always intentional
Is it a sin to give? No Yes - major sin
Physical objects used? No Often yes - hair, soil, objects
Speed of onset Usually quick - hours or days Can take days to weeks to show
Symptoms Tiredness, headache, bad luck, mood change Often more severe - personality change, visions, extreme fear
Affects objects? Yes Yes but differently
Islamic treatment Ruqyah, washing water from person who gave it Intensive Ruqyah, finding and destroying the physical sihr

What to Do When You Are Not Sure

Start with the standard Ruqyah described in this guide. This works for both evil eye and black magic. If after consistent Ruqyah over 2-3 weeks there is no improvement, seek help from a scholar or qualified Ruqyah practitioner who follows the Quran and Sunnah only. Never go to anyone who uses jinn, claims to counter magic with magic, or charges extremely high fees for "special" treatment.

Full FAQ - 14 Questions About Evil Eye in Islam

* * *
Is the evil eye real in Islam?
Yes. The evil eye is confirmed in the Quran and authentic hadith. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said the evil eye is real and that it can take a person to the grave. It is not a cultural belief but a confirmed religious fact in Islam. Surah Al-Falaq specifically mentions seeking protection from the harm of the envier, which scholars link directly to the evil eye.
What are the symptoms of evil eye in Islam?
Common symptoms include sudden unexplained tiredness, headaches especially at the top of the head, feeling unusually cold, sudden drop in mood or motivation, problems sleeping, bad luck that comes without reason, and feeling heaviness in the chest. Symptoms in babies include sudden refusal to feed, constant crying, and fever without infection. These symptoms are also common in many illnesses, so a doctor should always be consulted first.
What is the difference between evil eye (nazar) and hasad (envy)?
Nazar happens when someone looks at you with admiration or surprise - even without bad intentions - and this look causes harm. Hasad is when someone actively wishes your blessing to be taken away. Hasad is a major sin. Nazar is not a sin for the person giving it but it can still cause real harm. The two can occur together - a person with hasad in their heart is more likely to give a strong nazar.
Can you give yourself the evil eye?
Yes, a person can give themselves the evil eye. If you look in the mirror and admire yourself without saying Masha Allah, scholars say this is possible. The same applies to looking at your own work, business, or children with excessive self-admiration. This is why it is important to say Masha Allah even when admiring things related to yourself.
What does Masha Allah mean and does it protect from evil eye?
Masha Allah means "whatever Allah wills." When you see something good and say Masha Allah, you are acknowledging that the blessing comes from Allah alone. The Prophet commanded people to say this when they see something they admire. It is one of the main preventions against giving the evil eye to others. The full version "Masha Allah La Quwwata Illa Billah" is mentioned in the Quran in Surah Al-Kahf and is even stronger.
Which surah protects from evil eye?
Surah Al-Falaq (chapter 113) specifically mentions seeking protection from the evil of the envier. Surah An-Nas (chapter 114) protects from whispers. Ayat al-Kursi (verse 2:255) is a general strong protection that the Prophet said protects throughout the day and night. The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah are also highly recommended for protection before sleep.
How do you treat evil eye with Ruqyah?
The basic Ruqyah for evil eye includes reciting Surah Al-Fatiha seven times, Ayat al-Kursi three times, and Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas three times each. You recite these while blowing softly into cupped hands and wipe over your body. You can also recite into water, drink some of it, and wash your head and body with the rest. This should be done consistently every day for at least a week.
Can evil eye affect babies and children?
Yes. Babies and young children are considered more vulnerable because people admire them constantly without saying Masha Allah. The Prophet used to seek protection for his grandsons Hasan and Husain using specific duas. Parents should recite the protective duas daily for their children. Signs in babies include sudden refusal to feed, constant unexplained crying, and fever without clear infection. Always see a doctor first for these symptoms.
Can evil eye affect your business or money?
Yes. Sudden unexplained problems in business, loss of customers, or money disappearing without reason can sometimes be connected to evil eye on your wealth. The solution is regular recitation of morning and evening adhkar, reading Surah Al-Baqarah in your workplace, giving sadaqah from your income regularly, and not sharing business successes openly with people who may have envy in their hearts.
Is the blue evil eye symbol (nazar boncugu) allowed in Islam?
No. The blue eye symbol is not from Islam. It comes from ancient Greek and Turkish folk traditions and has no basis in Islamic teaching. Hanging it in your home or wearing it as an amulet is not permitted. Placing trust in it for protection is a form of shirk because protection comes only from Allah. Islamic protection comes through Quranic recitation and authentic duas - not through objects or symbols.
How long does it take to recover from evil eye?
There is no fixed time. Some people feel better after a few days of consistent Ruqyah. Others may take 2 to 3 weeks. The key is consistency - do the Ruqyah every day without missing, combine it with increased salah, sadaqah, and direct dua to Allah. If physical symptoms are present, continue seeing a doctor alongside the Ruqyah.
What should you do if you know who gave you the evil eye?
The Prophet mentioned that the person who gave the evil eye should perform wudu and the water used should be poured over the affected person. This is in authentic hadith. However, be very careful about accusing anyone without being certain. False accusations can destroy relationships and are a sin in themselves. Focus primarily on the Ruqyah treatment which works regardless of whether you know the source.
Can evil eye cause marriage problems?
Yes, evil eye can affect marriages. Sudden problems between a couple who were previously happy, unexplained coldness and distance, or constant arguments without any real reason can sometimes be connected to evil eye from people who are jealous of the relationship. The solution is to increase Quran in the home, read Surah Al-Baqarah regularly together, perform Ruqyah as a couple, and make dua for each other consistently.
Is having evil eye the same as black magic?
No. Evil eye (nazar) is different from black magic (sihr). Evil eye happens unintentionally when someone looks at you with admiration. Black magic is done deliberately with the intention to harm, usually involving physical objects and the involvement of jinn or shaitan. Both are real in Islam but they are different in their cause, symptoms, and treatment. Standard Ruqyah is the first approach for both - if symptoms persist after consistent Ruqyah, seek guidance from a qualified Islamic scholar.
