Understanding the Different Types of Durood (Salawat)

When Muslims seek to send blessings upon Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) — fulfilling Allah's command in Quran 33:56 — they often encounter many different Durood formulas online, in books, and from their communities. Durood-e-Ibrahim, Durood Sharif, Durood Tunajjina, Durood Nariya… which one should you recite? Are they all equally valid? Are some more authentic than others?

The answer matters greatly. Islam emphasizes following the Prophet's exact guidance wherever it exists, particularly in acts of worship. This comprehensive guide compares all six major Durood formulas on the key criteria: hadith authenticity, source, benefits, scholarly consensus, and appropriate contexts for recitation.

The short answer: Durood-e-Ibrahim is the only Durood directly taught by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself. All others are later compositions — some authenticated as permissible, some debated, and some controversial among mainstream scholars. Read on for the full picture.

The Key Question
"O Allah's Messenger! We know how to send peace upon you, but how should we send blessings upon you?" — The companions asked. The Prophet taught them Durood-e-Ibrahim. This direct prophetic teaching is what distinguishes it from all other Durood formulas.

Durood-e-Ibrahim Wins — By Every Measure
The only Durood directly taught by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself. Narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim — the two highest-ranked hadith collections. Approved by all four major madhabs for use in daily prayer.
✅ Sahih al-Bukhari (3370) ✅ Sahih Muslim (406) ✅ All 4 Madhabs Agree ✅ Obligatory in Salah ✅ Prophetic Wording
Formula 1 of 6

Durood-e-Ibrahim (الصلاة الإبراهيمية)

Durood-e-Ibrahim is the direct prophetic formula — the only Salawat personally dictated by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) when asked. Its authenticity is beyond question, resting on the very strongest foundations in all of Islamic scholarship.

Used in Salah✓ Yes — obligatory per Shafi'i & Hanbali; highly recommended per Hanafi & Maliki
Reward10 blessings from Allah, 10 sins erased, 10 degrees elevated — per recitation (Sahih Muslim)

Scholar Consensus: Every major Islamic school — Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali — unanimously agrees that Durood-e-Ibrahim is the most authentic Salawat formula. It is the only one whose exact wording was prescribed by the Prophet himself.

Formula 2 of 6

Durood Sharif — What Does It Mean?

Many people, especially from South Asian backgrounds, use "Durood Sharif" as a distinct prayer. However, "Durood Sharif" is not a specific formula — it is a general Urdu/Persian honorific term meaning "the noble blessing." It is used colloquially to refer to any form of Salawat upon the Prophet, but most commonly refers to Durood-e-Ibrahim itself.

In some South Asian Islamic texts, "Durood Sharif" refers specifically to a shortened version: simply Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad, or sometimes just the phrase Ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam. None of these shortened forms are incorrect — but Durood-e-Ibrahim remains the most complete and preferred.

Durood Sharif (Short Form)
درود شریف — as commonly used in South Asia
✓ Authentic — General Term
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلِّمْ
English"O Allah, send prayers and peace upon our master Muhammad and upon his family and companions."
Status"Durood Sharif" is a category name, not a specific hadith — the phrase above is one common South Asian version
Authenticity★★★★☆  Permissible — general Salawat forms are valid as long as they ask Allah to bless the Prophet
Note on "Sayyidina"Adding "Sayyidina" (our master) is debated. Hanafi, Maliki, and Shafi'i scholars generally permit it. Some Hanbali scholars prefer the exact prophetic text without additions.
Used in Salah⚠ Not specifically prescribed — use Durood-e-Ibrahim in prayer

Key Clarification: "Durood Sharif" vs "Durood-e-Ibrahim"

  • In everyday speech, many Muslims use "Durood Sharif" to mean Durood-e-Ibrahim — this is correct usage
  • In scholarly texts, "Durood Sharif" is a category that encompasses all Salawat formulas
  • The specific short South Asian version above is valid but not from a specific hadith — it is a later scholarly composition
  • Bottom line: If someone says "recite Durood Sharif," recite Durood-e-Ibrahim — you cannot go wrong
Formula 3 of 6

Durood Tunajjina — The "Salvation" Durood

Durood Tunajjina (درود تنجینا), meaning the "Durood of salvation," is widely popular particularly in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa. It promises extraordinary rewards for its recitation and is often recommended for times of difficulty. However, its hadith chain is significantly debated among scholars.

English"O Allah, send prayers upon our master Muhammad that will deliver us from all fears and afflictions; fulfill for us all our needs; purify us from all evil; raise us to the highest ranks; and lead us to the utmost limits of all that is good, in life and after death."
SourceAttributed to a hadith narrated by Ubayy ibn Ka'b — but the chain contains disputed narrators. Not found in Bukhari or Muslim.
Authenticity★★★☆☆  Chain is weak (da'if) per most hadith scholars; the text itself is permissible as a du'a
Used in Salah✗ Not recommended — use Durood-e-Ibrahim in prayer
Permissible? Most scholars permit reciting it as a general du'a/supplication — but caution against attributing specific rewards to the Prophet

Scholarly Caution: Imam Shawkani, Ibn al-Jawzi, and many contemporary hadith scholars classify the specific chain attributed to Durood Tunajjina as weak (da'if). You may recite it as a du'a, but do not attribute specific numerical rewards to the Prophet unless the hadith is verified — doing so when the hadith is weak is impermissible.

"Whoever attributes something to me that I did not say, let him prepare his seat in Hell-fire."
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) — Sahih al-Bukhari (109) · This hadith governs the caution needed around weak narrations
Formula 4 of 6

Durood Nariya — Popular But Controversial

Durood Nariya (also called Durood Tafrijiyya or Salat al-Fatih in some traditions) is perhaps the most widely recited Durood outside of Durood-e-Ibrahim, particularly in Sufi orders. It contains beautiful phrases but raises significant concerns for mainstream scholars due to certain phrases that could imply the Prophet has divine attributes.

Durood Nariya (Durood Tafrijiyya)
درود نارية · صلاة التفريجية
⚠ Controversial — Use Caution
English"O Allah, bestow complete blessings and perfect peace upon our master Muhammad, by whom knots are untied, distress is relieved, needs are fulfilled, desires are attained and good endings are achieved — and rain is sought through his noble countenance — and upon his family and companions, in every moment, by the number of all that is known to You."
SourceNot from any hadith collection. Composed by later scholars — attributed variously to Shaykh Ibrahim al-Tazi and others (dates unclear). Popularised by Tijaniyya Sufi order.
Authenticity★★☆☆☆  No hadith basis — entirely a later scholarly composition
ConcernThe phrase "knots are untied by him" and "needs are fulfilled by him" attributed to the Prophet independently — mainstream scholars consider this problematic as it may attribute divine intermediary powers
Used in Salah✗ Not permissible — no scholarly basis for this

Mainstream Scholarly Position: Scholars including Sheikh Ibn Baz, Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen, and many contemporary Hadith specialists advise against Durood Nariya due to theological concerns in its wording. While Sufi scholars may permit or encourage it, Muslims following the mainstream orthodox position are advised to use Durood-e-Ibrahim instead.

Formula 5 of 6

Durood Lakhi — Is It Authentic?

Durood Lakhi is often described as equivalent in reward to reciting Durood 100,000 times (lakh = 100,000 in South Asian counting systems). It circulates widely on social media and in popular Islamic compilations. However, the claims made about it require careful scrutiny.

Durood Lakhi
درود لاکھی — "100,000 reward" Durood
⚠ No Hadith Basis
English"O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad, as many as what is in the knowledge of Allah — a blessing that is perpetual as the perpetuity of Allah's dominion."
SourceNo traceable hadith chain. The claim that it equals 100,000 Durood in reward has no Quranic or Sunnah basis that scholars have been able to authenticate.
Authenticity★☆☆☆☆  Fabricated reward claim — the text itself may be permissible as du'a but the specific reward is unverified
The TextThe wording itself (asking for blessings "as many as in Allah's knowledge") is found in some authentic narrations in different forms — but not with this specific chain or reward claim
Used in Salah✗ No basis — use Durood-e-Ibrahim

Note on "Shortcut" Durood Claims

  • Multiple Durood formulas circulate online claiming to give reward equivalent to thousands or hundreds of thousands of recitations
  • Hadith scholars have not been able to verify most of these chains — many are fabricated (mawdu') or severely weak (munkar)
  • The rule: If a reward seems extraordinarily high and is not found in Bukhari, Muslim, or the major Sunan collections, treat with caution
  • Durood-e-Ibrahim's reward of 10× per recitation is itself extraordinary — and it's fully authenticated in Sahih Muslim
Formula 6 of 6

Durood Taj — The "Crown" Salawat

Durood Taj (درود تاج) — the "Crown Durood" — is a lengthy Salawat formula popular in certain Sufi orders and subcontinental Islamic traditions. Like Durood Nariya, it contains phrases that mainstream scholars find theologically problematic, attributing attributes to the Prophet that only belong to Allah.

Durood Taj
درود تاج — The Crown Salawat
⚠ Theologically Problematic
SourceNo hadith basis — composition attributed to later Sufi scholars; exact origin is unclear
Authenticity★☆☆☆☆  No hadith chain — later composition with contested theological content
Main ConcernCertain phrases attribute knowledge of the unseen (ʿilm al-ghayb) and other divine qualities to the Prophet — which contradicts the Quran (7:188, 72:26) and the Prophet's own statements
Scholarly ViewPermitted by some Sufi scholars within their traditions; strongly discouraged by mainstream hadith scholars and Salafi scholars. The safer position is to avoid it.
Used in Salah✗ Not permissible by any mainstream scholarly opinion

When to Use Each Durood

🕌

In Daily Prayer (Salah)

Only Durood-e-Ibrahim has explicit prophetic sanction for use in the final Tashahhud. All four madhabs agree it is the correct formula for prayer.

✓ Durood-e-Ibrahim Only
🤲

Before & After Du'a

Durood-e-Ibrahim is the gold standard. Durood Sharif (general forms) are also fine. Avoid using contested Durood in acts of worship.

✓ Durood-e-Ibrahim
📅

Friday (Jumu'ah) Dhikr

Increase Durood-e-Ibrahim specifically on Fridays per hadith. Durood Sharif (general) is also acceptable. Avoid innovated formulas.

✓ Durood-e-Ibrahim
📿

Personal Daily Dhikr

Durood-e-Ibrahim is best. Durood Sharif (short general forms) are permissible. Durood Tunajjina may be used as personal du'a with awareness of its weakness.

✓ Durood-e-Ibrahim
😟

Times of Difficulty

Some use Durood Tunajjina at these times. Durood-e-Ibrahim remains the safer and more authenticated option. The prophetic reward of 10× applies at all times.

~ Durood-e-Ibrahim is safer
🎓

Teaching Children

Always start with Durood-e-Ibrahim. Teach children the authentic prophetically-approved form first before introducing any other Salawat.

✓ Durood-e-Ibrahim Only

Simple Rule to Remember: If Durood-e-Ibrahim is sufficient for the greatest act of worship — Salah — then it is sufficient for every other situation. When in doubt about any other Durood formula, simply recite Durood-e-Ibrahim. You will always be on safe, authenticated, prophetically-approved ground.

Classical & Contemporary Scholarship

What Scholars Say About Different Durood Types

نو
Imam al-Nawawi (1233–1277 CE)
Shafi'i Scholar, Author of Sharh Sahih Muslim
"The best Salawat is the one that the Prophet taught to his companions when they asked him about it — and that is the Ibrahimiyya formula. The Prophet would not choose for his Ummah except the noblest and most complete formula."
قيم
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (1292–1350 CE)
Hanbali Scholar, Author of Jalāʾ al-Afhām (book on Salawat)
"Durood-e-Ibrahim is the most virtuous of all Salawat formulas, because it was specifically chosen and taught by the Messenger of Allah. Reciting it is following the Sunnah; reciting other non-prophetic compositions, however beautiful, remains at a lower level."
حج
Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (1372–1449 CE)
Hadith Master, Author of Fath al-Bari (Commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari)
"The correct position is that in the prayer, one should stick to the wording that was transmitted from the Prophet. As for outside of prayer, there is more flexibility — but the Ibrahimiyya formula remains the most meritorious in all circumstances."
عث
Sheikh Muhammad ibn Uthaymeen (1929–2001)
Contemporary Saudi Scholar, Member of Senior Scholars Council
"Those formulas of Salawat that contain phrases attributing divine attributes to the Prophet — such as knowledge of the unseen, or needs being fulfilled through him — are problematic. A Muslim should be content with what the Prophet taught, which is both more authentic and theologically correct."

Summary of Scholarly Positions on Durood Types

  • Durood-e-Ibrahim: Unanimously recommended by all scholars across all schools — the highest authority
  • Durood Sharif (general): Generally permissible — valid as dhikr and du'a outside prayer
  • Durood Tunajjina: Divided — Sufi and some Hanafi scholars permit as du'a; hadith scholars note weak chain
  • Durood Nariya: Mainstream scholars advise against due to theological concerns; permitted in some Sufi traditions
  • Durood Lakhi: The exaggerated reward claim is not authenticated; text as general du'a may be acceptable
  • Durood Taj: Mainstream scholars advise against due to theological problems in the text
Conclusion

Final Verdict — What Should You Recite?

🏆
For Prayer (Salah)
Durood-e-Ibrahim — always and exclusively. This is the only formula with direct prophetic approval for use in the Tashahhud. No other Durood has this status.
📿
For Daily Dhikr
Durood-e-Ibrahim remains the best choice. It carries the greatest authenticated reward and follows the Sunnah precisely. Make it your default.
📚
For Teaching Others
Always teach Durood-e-Ibrahim first. Build the foundation on the most authentic prophetic formula before introducing any other Salawat compositions.
"Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send ten blessings upon him, erase ten of his sins, and raise him ten degrees in status."
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) — Sahih Muslim · This authentic reward applies specifically when reciting Durood-e-Ibrahim as taught
The Bottom Line
Durood-e-Ibrahim is authenticated, prophetically taught, universally approved, rewards are verified, and it is sufficient for every situation. When in doubt — recite Durood-e-Ibrahim. You are following the direct teaching of the Prophet (PBUH) himself.
